Bovec Summer School

A meeting place for languages and cultures from the Alpine-Adriatic region

The Bovec Summer School serves as a meeting place for languages and cultures from the Alpine-Adriatic region. It is coordinated by the University of Klagenfurt (Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt) in collaboration with partner institutions, including the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Rijeka, as well as the Universities of Ljubljana, Trieste, Udine, and Koper, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.
The picturesque Bovec, a Slovenian town in the turquoise Soča River Valley beneath the southern slopes of the Julian Alps, sits at the crossroads of Slovenia, Austria, and Italy. It provides the perfect setting for a two-week summer school of Slovenian, German, Italian, Friulian, and Croatian. The programme also includes lectures, workshops, excursions, field trips, walks, hiking trips, and multilingual conversations around the campfire, accompanied by guitars.

A Topic Dedicated to Social Events and Issues

The Bovec Summer School takes place in July, lasts two weeks, and each year introduces a new and inspiring central theme devoted to current social issues (coexistence, social networks, ecology, civil society). In 2019, Austrian writer Anna Baar delivered the opening lecture on the theme The Other and Me, translated into Croatian by Željka Macan (PDF document available).

Information and applications for the current year’s Bovec Summer School are available from March onwards in the News section.
